Covering all aspects of the environmental compliance audit process, delivered by an expert auditor, you’ll learn what and where to focus, the key environmental regulatory areas, how to plan and lead the audit, how to identify, classify and discuss concerns and how to prepare for external auditors and M&A due diligence programmes.

Modules

1. Coverage & Definitions

In this introductory module, you’ll learn about the types of environmental audit, their differences and their objectives.

2. Environmental Regulation(T)

In this module, you’ll be introduced to the most relevant environmental regulations as they apply to your business, how to stay informed and where to find resources and help.

3. Preparing to Audit(T)

In this module, we’ll explore how to plan for an audit including the audit team skills required, auditor roles and responsibilities, issuing information requests and key areas of focus. You’ll cover how to plan audit boundaries and prepare for the audit, including the tools and equipment needed.

4. Audit Day(T)

In this module, you’ll learn how to hold opening meetings, explain areas of coverage, approach and the day’s structure, how to hold interviews and common responses, document and review processes, testing and following lines of evidence and site walkovers. You’ll also cover potential problem areas, common issues and auditor tips.

5. Reviewing Audit Results

In this module, you’ll learn how to log concerns, observations and non-compliances, how to classify issues and set plans for corrective action.

6. Management Discussions

In this module, you’ll cover how to hold post-audit management discussions, including tips for delivering ‘bad’ or unexpected news, presenting key findings objectively, the skills and aptitude required, closing a meeting, agreeing on action plans and follow-ups.

7. Preparing for External Auditors(T)

In this module, we’ll cover the other common forms of environmental audit, how to prepare for an external auditor, including different auditor styles and how to respond and deliver well when interviewed on the day.

8. Preparing for Due Diligence(T)

In this final module, we’ll introduce the specialist field of environmental due diligence as practiced during company acquisitions and disposals, re-financing and investing, helping you stay ahead of the game and be fully prepared. You’ll learn about the additional steps involved with audits of this type, including top tips from a former due diligence auditor.

Instructor

Matt Farnsworth

Matt is the founder and director of Pitchstone Consulting and a leading sustainability and ESG trainer, coach and advisor. Bringing over 25 years of sustainability and ESG experience, he has worked both in-house (most recently as Chief Sustainability Officer) and in global management consultancies helping deliver strategic and practical sustainable solutions for business and brands globally.

He has been published in The Times Newspaper, Real Deals, HR Magazine and Accountancy Age and is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Fellow of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (FISEP).

He is also an ISEP Registered Principal Environmental Auditor, having conducted several hundred Environmental, Health & Safety, Social, Governance compliance and risk audits, reviews and M&A due diligence programmes internationally, across multiple sectors and industries.

He specialises in empowering business and individuals to achieve their sustainability goals, building efficient and more resilient business and supply chains.
